Jig for Airbus A340-600 Wing

Image showing the completed jig in situ in BAE Systems Assembly HallConcurrent Engineering practices were used throughout the design, manufacture and installation of this tooling. As a result the total package from concept to final buy-off by the client was completed within a twelve month period.

The design of this jig was split between our Preston, Bristol and Wolverhampton offices

Our Bristol team was responsible for the solid modelling of all the jig-to-component interfaces and all the Smart Laser Systems Targets. With this jig assembling 180 components this was a major task.

Manufax with whom Assystem have a long history of collaboration on design and manufacture projects produced the jig to Assystem design.

By using the Smart Laser Tracker for measurement and setting of the jig we were able to achieve an accuracy of 0.1mm over the full 39 metre length and 9 metre width enabling BAE Systems to supply assemblies built to higher accuracy levels than ever before.
