In order to keep a major naval vessel at sea, Assystem was tasked with carrying out a complex stress and fatigue assessment of a key power plant component. For the technical enthusiast, this required interactions with CFD analysis to determine thermal environments, complex meshing, non-linear finite element analysis and, because of the high cycle count on the component and the accuracy of analysis required, comparison of the multi-linear kinematic model with the Chaboche materials model based on cyclic materials data. In addition, fracture mechanics assessments of welds were performed to clear the component for continued usage in a safety critical operation.

This high profile task was successfully carried out, on time and ahead of budget by a team involving experts from Preston, Bristol and Sunderland.
